Subedar Neeraj Chopra (born 24 December 1997) is an Indian javelin thrower and Junior Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army. August 2021 he collected six gold medals at major tournaments around the world. He is the reigning Olympic champion and the first athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Olympics.

At the IAAF U20 World Championships in 2016, Chopra set a world record for U20 with 86.48 meters and was the first Indian athlete to ever win a world title in U-20 athletics. Neeraj Chopra was also selected as the flag bearer for India’s opening ceremony at the 2018 Asian Games, marking her first appearance at the Asian Games. He won the gold medal (88.06 m) at the 2018 Asian Games and the 2018 Community Games. Chopra won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics with a throw of 87.58 m as one of the two Indians to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics.

In 2016 he was appointed sergeant in the Indian Army with the rank of Naib Subedar.

Neraj Chopra won a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics on 7 August 2021 with a throw of 87.58 m, the first Olympic medal in athletics won by an Indian. Neraj Chopra is the second Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in singles. On 11 August 2008, Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the men’s 10 meter air rifle at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

At the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, Niraj again won the gold medal with a distance of 85.23 meters.

Neeraj Chopra recorded his best performance of the season in the men’s javelin throw at the 2018 Community Games (CWG) with 86.47 meters. Chopra not only joined the elite list of Indian athletes who won gold medals on her Community Games debut, but also triumphed as the first Indian in the javelin throw at the CWG.

In May 2018 he again broke the national record in the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 87.43 meters.

Chopra, 22, was the only track and field athlete recommended by AFI for the country’s top sporting award in 2018. Neeraj Chopra was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2018 after winning gold at Coastal Gold.

He is currently being trained by German biomechanic expert Klaus Bartoniec. He was previously coached by Gary Calvert, Werner Daniels and Uwe Hon.

He made his Asian Games debut, represented India at the 2018 Asian Games, and was also selected as the flag bearer of the Indian contingent during the 2018 Asian Games Parade. On 27 August 2018, Niraj threw an 88.06m distance at the 2018 Asian Games to win gold in the men’s javelin and broke a new national record for India which surpassed the previous record. He won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and made India proud. On 5 March 2021, Niraj Chopra again broke the previous national record, setting a new record at 88.07 meters and leading the world in 2021. It was also India’s first gold medal at the Asian Games. .
